Copy – Line – Developmental

Editing at Voice & Pen comes in three flavors – copy editing, line editing and developmental editing.

Read the following to determine the type of editing you want for your creation, then decide on the best course of action.

Copy Editing
  • Business – Copy, Training, Scripts, Press,  Papers, Presentations, Speeches, Collateral, Web
  • Manuscripts – Fiction, Non-fiction, Theses, Papers, Scripts
  • Words can be changed and sentence structure fixed according to document type and audience.
    • Often confused with proofreading. (I.e., it is not proofreading.) Go to the proofreading section for more information.
  • Checks and changes on grammar, punctuation, spelling, fact checking, page and chapter numbering are done.
  • Checks and changes on echo (repeated) words
  • Double-checks on consistency, timeline accuracy, table of contents, footnotes and bibliography are performed.

    • business/sales: $48/hr, 5 pages/hr
    • fiction: $37/hr, 8 pages/hr
    • non-fiction:$42/hr, 5 pages/hr
Line Editing

More than “corrections”, I’m looking to help the author find the power of their own voice.

  • Business – Presentations, Product Intros, Copy, Collateral, Web, Training, Press
  • Manuscript – Fiction, Non-fiction, Papers, Theses, Scripts, Speeches
  • Stylistic or content editing after all developmental and structural editing has been completed.
  • Includes checks changes related to voice, word choice, characterizations, dialogue, hooks and prompts, dialogue tag overuse, similar sentence structures, sentences beginning with same word, filler word use, overall consistency.
  • Pricing
    • business/sales, fiction, non-fiction: $48/hr, 4 pages/hr
Developmental Editing

My aim is to make the author’s vision mine. The arrangment and structure flows out of that.

  • Business – Presentations, Product Intros, Copy, Collateral, Web, Training, Press
  • Manuscript – Fiction, Non-fiction, Papers, Theses, Scripts, Speeches
  • Done from a “big picture”, story-as-a-whole-perspective.
  • It could include rework of plot, setting, structure, character development, edits or rearrangement of scenes, introductions and endings.
  • Pricing
    • business/sales: $58/hr, 5 pages/hr
    • fiction: $48/hr, 4 pages/hr
    • non-fiction: $57/hr, 4 pages/hr
